Pourquoi stories are stories that explain why things in the natural world are the way they are such as: “why does bear have a short tail?”
or “how did the moon get in the sky?”
or “how did the ocean come to be?”
"Pourquoi" is a French word meaning "why." Usually we pronounce the word pourquoi like "poor-kwa".
Pourquoi tales:
In this Webquest, you will get to learn about pourquoi stories in small groups by listening to and reading examples that you will compare. Then, you and your small group will pick a pourquoi story to learn and tell to your class.

- often include animals that have human-like characteristics (they can talk, etc)
- often start with a phrase like, "A long time ago, when ____ had a _______". For example, "A long time ago, when bear had a long tail..."
- often end with a phrase like, "And that is the way it is to this very day", or "And that is why ____ has a ______." For example, "And that is why bear has a short tail."
